- Marwar
- The western part of Rajasthan stretching from Bikaner in the north to Mount Abu separated from Mewar by the southern spurt of the Aravali range is identified as Marwar. Until the end of the 12th century, southern Marwar was under the control of the Chaulukyas of Gujarat, while much of the central parts were under the sway of the Chahamanas. Marwar emerged as a distinct state during the 15th century under a Rathor ruling clan that claimed descent from the Gahadavalas evicted by the Ghaurids from Kanauj in 1193. From the very beginning, Marwar had to face the hostility of Mewar. Jodha (1438-1489) asserted Marwar's independence by expelling Mewar troops from there. He also founded Jodhpur (1459) as the capital of Marwar.
